When deciding on what we want out of life or pursuing this dream of ours, we must first understand why. Why do we want what we want? There is no point of pursuing a goal or dream, if we don’t understand our true reasoning behind why we are pursuing it. We may think that we know why, but usually there is a different underlying reason. Knowing our true purpose will help us stop chasing attention.
The need for attention in basketball
Most people pursue goals and aspirations for the sake of receiving attention. They will never admit that attention or recognition is what they are after. They may frame it as trying to help others or be an inspiration. In reality, people seem like they are helping others, but they are really doing it for selfish reasons.
This is something I have seen a lot of in the basketball training industry. There are trainers out there who only care about the money and some that only care about getting more social media attention. The whole purpose of being a trainer is to help a player develop and do what is best for them.
It’s also important for players to understand this. Many players want to go play on teams that will help them get more exposure and opportunities to be seen by coaches. Players should really want to play for coaches and be a part of programs that value who they are as an individual. A lot of teams use their players to help build their brand, even if it means go against what is in the players best interest.
How to seek attention the right way
It is not a bad thing necessarily to want attention, but it is bad when that attention is wanted for selfish purposes. Attention is a commodity. It is hard to come by and people will do anything to have it. People need the attention of others because they think it is what will help their own cause. The way we go about drawing the attention plays a major role in how we are perceived. If we are constantly trying to turn the attention toward ourselves, other people will grow tired of us very quickly. But if we are turning the attention toward others, then we will be viewed in a much more positive light.
Attention and recognition are like an addictive drug for some people. Once they get a little bit of attention, they want more and more of it. They can never feel satisfied with the attention they receive. This starts to create envy and jealousy of those that have more attention. Jealousy and envy are hard feelings to sit with, we feel like we have to take action on them. This usually results in trying to gain more attention from more people.
How to use attention
Attention and recognition as an end goal will only lead to a fast demise. There are few things in this world that are “here today and gone tomorrow” quite like attention. People have very short attention spans. We as humans don’t like to give our attention to one person or one idea for too long. There is always going to be someone new or some new idea that comes along and takes away from our attention and recognition.
Most people chase attention because they can’t stand themselves. They need the attention to feel validated. Chasing attention forces us to do things that are not true to who we are. So, we end up receiving attention for something that is not even an accurate representation of who we are. This is how people let attention change who they are. They start to become the person that everyone thinks they are instead of who they actually are. Eventually this will lead us to a place where we cannot even recognize ourselves.

Why we need attention
Pursuing attention and recognition comes from a place of insecurity. Many people look externally to others for validation and acceptance of themselves. They receive all of their self-confidence from others. Only when they are receiving attention do they feel good about themselves. If we need the attention of others to feel good about ourselves, then we are living to please others which will really make us hate ourselves.
The way that others feel about us, should never dictate the way we feel about ourselves. We have to cultivate our own self-esteem and our own ways of loving ourselves. There can be no love without acceptance.
When you have something, you really want, ask yourself why you really want it. Deep down you may find that the real answer is the attention it will bring you. If attention is what you are after, know that it will not bring you any satisfaction or fulfillment. This will only lead us down a path of frustration and always wanting more.
